How To Stop Condensation In A Tent |Tips That Work

Aug 8, 2022
Although there are many great things about camping in winter, the condensed water in the tent when you wake up is not one of them!
Did you know that the average person breathes out about 1 liter of water every night?

Although this is an interesting fact, this accumulated moisture will soon cause real trouble for our campers

How to Judge Whether It is Leakage or Condensation?

For those who have just started camping, when you camp in the cold and experience condensation for the first time, it is easy to think that your tent is leaking.

If there is a sheet of moisture that has coated the inside of your fly, then it is probably just condensation. But if it’s the seams or a specific point where there is water coming in, then it’s more likely to be a leak.

What is Condensation?

"Condensation is the process by which water vapor turns into liquid. It is the opposite of evaporation. Liquid water turns into steam. Condensation occurs in one of two ways: either cooling the air to the dew point or becoming so saturated that it cannot hold more water."

How to Stop Condensation in the Tent?

When we camp, the weather gets cold until late at night, and the moisture in the tent air will condense and gather on the walls because it has nowhere to escape.

1. Ventilation is the key!

The best way to get rid of the moisture you exhale is to ventilate your shelter as much as possible. This may seem counterintuitive, but opening the vents or windows will make your environment drier and more comfortable.

2. Throw the Ball in the Right Position

Similarly, it is best to place the tent in the correct wind direction to maximize the airflow into the tent.

Try to throw the ball on higher ground (if it is safe to do so) and avoid any holes where air can sink. To keep water to a minimum, you also need to set up a camp away from the water.

3. Keep Away from Tall and Dense Grass

Although tall, dense grass looks great, it also contains a lot of water - especially in Britain, where rain is very common. It is particularly common in valleys where the accumulation of cold air will only promote more surface moisture.

4. Store the Wet Equipment Outside the Tent

If you have wet clothes and shoes, try to store them in the lobby or under a cover outside the shelter. This is because when your equipment dries, it will add more water to the environment, which is not ideal.
